Anywayyy. What do you guys consider art/style/character/whatever theft? Short of yanking the actual image I mean. Does the image have to be in a style terribly similar to yours, or will a few small details bother you? Does the character have to be really similar to yours, or will you get worked up over a color combo or hairstyle? I want to know where you personally draw the line, because everyone has a different opinion on this subject.

Personally... I really don't care if somebody 'copies' me. It bothered me at first, but I figured out pretty quick that most of these people are just trying out something new, or something they thought was cool or whatever. They're not trying to be like me, or become popular, or something really lame like that. I do the same kind of thing, I'll try out stuff I've seen other people do, but it's not like I copy half of their style and pass it off as being 'unique'. And if I end up posting something drawn that way, I usually say that I wanted to try someone else's way of drawing whatever. Usually what I tried out it adapted into something different and becomes part of my style, or I ditch that entirely. It's not until the same person repeatedly copies several parts of my own style that I get really annoyed, but even then I don't start stuff over it. If anything I send them a note and tell them outright it's starting to get to me :[

Actually, if anything it's when people copy my characters that I get annoyed 8I I don't mean like, a color scheme or a little marking etc, because honestly, what hasn't been done at this point? I mean a full-blown CLONE of your character. I saw this red panda once, where it had Lynn's purple coat with the black/redpurple/cream/white combo, and most of the markings were exactly the same, right down to her previous back marking. That one bothered me just because it was so blatent, but it's not like I started a war over it. I don't think I even said anything about it, I don't remember really |D

Especially with characters, I've noticed that the people who copy other's characters... never draw the character again. Or they're one of those people where the entire gallery is of refs of characters that never get drawn. And that's fine with me really; it doesn't get to me until they actually commission or trade with someone and get art of said 'ripped' character.

And then with poses and backgrounds and stuff, at this point... nothing is 'unique'. It might be different or uncommon, but ultimately, somebody else will have thought of that or even done it long before you did. That's why I never understood all the internet wars that start up over this kind of thing. I mean, if you copied someone's art and claimed you did it all by yourself, yeah, that's just stupid. If you drew something that just happened to be similar to someone else's art, then that's called a coincidence and isn't worth starting crap over. Unless maybe you have a style really similar to the person who's art you accidentally copied. Then there might be issues |D

I can tell you right now I've had ideas for characters or something that someone else did too. I had this character once that I thought was SOOO ORIGINAL, and then I found another character that was really similar to it. Instead of causing immediate drama I went through the person's gallery; turns out the first picture they had of the character was some six months before I'd even thought up my own character. Or the way I've been drawing fur in my sketches recently; it hasn't been shown in any art I've posted, so I knew when someone else did the exact same thing recently it was a coincidence. It's kind of interesting actually, but at the same time it bums me out because I'll think that I've got something different... and then that pops up |D

TL;DR: Tell me what you consider to be art/style/character/whatever 'theft'! Also [if you want to of course, I know I post chatty journals like this a lot sorry ;_____;] what do you do about it? Do you confront the person directly, or are you a pansy like me and just ignore it because you don't want to stir up drama publicly? |D AND THEN... what's the worst case of 'theft' you've come across, and/or the weirdest coincidence you've had personally? Sorry for all the questions and general babbling, I'm in another art slump and I'm just kind of farting around while I try to get back into art |D Plus, I find this kind of thing really interesting. Everybody has taken inspiration from someone/something else at one point or another, so we should all have some idea of when enough is enough, as far as copying and crap goes.
